Get behind the wheel (and screen)

New drivers might need to test their skills on a driving simulator even before hitting the streets for their road test.

Ohio is the first state in the nation to try using driving simulators as a way to screen new drivers. Ohio State’s Injury Biomechanics Research Center helped develop the software, which is now being tested by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

State officials say it comes down to safety — putting new drivers behind the wheel for their road test can be a safety issue for themselves, the examiner and other drivers.
